Danesholme Junior Academy

P.S.H.E (Personal, Social & Health Education)

Intent

The intent of our PSHE curriculum is to enable children to become healthy, secure, independent and responsible members of society. PSHE education helps pupils to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to thrive personally and socially. We aim to give children the confidence, emotional literacy and social skills to tackle many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. We provide our children with opportunities to learn about rights, responsibilities and respect and to appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth and achieve their potential by playing a positive role in school life.

Implementation

At Danesholme Junior Academy, PSHE is taught in distinct lessons and also embedded across our broad and balanced curriculum. We use the '1 Decision' Whole School PSHE Programme’s comprehensive scheme of work which ensures consistency and progression in our children’s learning.

The '1 Decision' lessons are reinforced and enhanced every day through our interactions in the school community. Staff also review and encourage reflection on PSHE themes with children as a result of issues that arise in the school day. PSHE is an important part of our assemblies, through which spiritual, moral, social and cultural understanding is nurtured.

Focus weeks and themes are also planned as part of our PSHE curriculum, for example Careers and Employability, Road Safety, Anti Bullying, and Mental Health Week.
