Danesholme Junior Academy

Geography

Intent

At Danesholme Junior Academy, we understand the importance of children gaining knowledge of the world and the impact we have had, and continue to have, on our planet.

Following the National Curriculum, we aim to provide a broad and balanced understanding of the Earth and how it has changed as a result of both nature and human impact. Developing a love for geography and, in turn, our planet through seeing themselves as ‘Geographers’ encourages that interest and understanding far beyond Junior school. We also want to ensure that our students gain the skills and geographical knowledge to equip them with the abilities to ask questions about the wider world around them, analyse evidence and statistics, think critically, and develop informed judgements.

We follow the National Curriculum for geography at Key Stage 2.

The National Curriculum for geography aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop contextual knowledge of the location of globally significant places – both terrestrial and marine – including their defining physical and human characteristics and how these provide a geographical context for understanding the actions of processes
  • understand the processes that give rise to key physical and human geographical features of the world, how these are interdependent and how they bring about spatial variation and change over time
  • are competent in the geographical skills needed to:
    • collect, analyse and communicate with a range of data gathered through experiences of fieldwork that deepen their understanding of geographical processes
    • interpret a range f sources of geographical information, including maps, diagrams, globes, aerial photographs and Geographical Information Systems (GIS)
    • cmmunicate geographical information in a variety of ways, including through maps, numerical and quantitative skills and writing at length.
